That was a DNS DDOS attack.

DNS stands for Domain Name System and is the technology behind allowing you to go to facebook.com in a web browser and not 69.63.176.13 which is its IP address aka phone number, to put it in more understandable terms.

DDOS means distributed denial of service. What does that mean? You know how after, say, a major sports event all the roads are clogged for hours so you can’t get anywhere by car? Today, the reason we couldn’t get to Facebook is because there was so much traffic on the internet “roads” that lead to its servers that your access request couldn’t get in and back to you in a timely manner…
